Public Hearing January 21, 2014 on Veterans Tax Exemption
The Saranac Lake Central School District Board of Education is seeking your feedback regarding a potential Alternative Veterans Exemption which would decrease property taxes for eligible war-time veterans and their spouses, while increasing them for remaining taxpayers.
In 2013, the New York Legislature granted school boards the right to offer property tax exemptions to eligible veterans. An exemption granted to veterans will result in an increase in taxes to those taxpayers not eligible for the exemption. In this case, non-veterans would pay a higher share of school taxes to make up for the revenue lost by granting the exemption.
We have provided several documents here to identify the different levels of exemption available and the potential tax implications.
Residents are welcome to speak during a public hearing at the Board of Education meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2014 at the Petrova Middle School library. Comments may be submitted via the school district website BOE contact page. All viewpoints will be considered. Thank you for your continued interest in the Saranac Lake Central School District.
