Saranac Lake Central School District

Elementary Literacy Page

We take great pride in providing the staff and students with best practices in education. Early literacy skills focus on the five big ideas in reading:

    • Phonemic Awareness
    • Phonic Instruction
    • Vocabulary
    • Fluency
    • Comprehension

Language Arts instruction in grades kindergarten through third grade consists of a 90 minute uninterrupted block. Students engage in whole group, learning stations, and differentiated small group guided reading instruction. The primary language arts program includes StoryTown* and model programs from Fountas and Pinnell.

Language Arts instruction in grades four and five consist of a 90 minute uninterrupted block as well. During this time students gather for explicit whole group instruction in reading and in writing, and then break for individualized or small group reading and writing instruction. The language arts program at the elementary level consists of Guided Reading, Literature Circles and Reading Workshop.

All kindergarten through fifth grade students learn to write through a process approach called Writing Workshop and The Units of Study in Opinion, Information and Narrative Writing, written by Lucy Calkins with Colleagues from the Reading and Writing Project.

Teachers at all grade levels use formative and summative assessments, along with the Common Core State Standards to guide their instruction.
